The best Asian sunscreens for oily skin [2018]

Most Western drugstore sunscreens with any decent level of SPF are terrible: greasy, goopy, and hard to spread. It’s a real nightmare to deal with when you have oily skin.

Looking for a lightweight, matte-finish face sunscreen with good oil control that won’t melt right off your face in humid weather? You’ve come to the right place. When it comes to oil control, texture, and SPF rating, Asian sunscreens are miles ahead of their Western counterparts. Read on to find out the best sunscreen for you!

Obagi Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen

HIGHLIGHTS

Pros:

– UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection
– No white cast
– Fragrance free
– Brightening
– Does not clog pores
– Contains anti aging antioxidants

Cons:

– More expensive than most drugstore sunscreens

A hybrid chemical-physical, dermatologist-recommended sunscreen from Obagi, the high-end Japanese skincare brand that’s been around since the 1980s and is globally renowned for its medical-grade cosmetic products. This non-greasy, high protection sunscreen has a creamy texture and gives a sheer, matte finish which helps keep your face shine-free throughout the day. Although this sunscreen is expensive, it’s certainly cheaper than getting laser treatment for sun damage 20 years from now. This sunscreen is worth the money if you are looking for extra brightening and antioxidant care for your skin beyond the oil control and UV protection. Check out these star anti aging skin care ingredients for example: coenzyme Q10 is a great antioxidant; squalane moisturizes and is also an antioxidant. The Alpha Hydroxy Acids improve skin texture and vitamin C brightens and reduces pigmentation and brown spots due to sun damage.

HIGHLIGHTS

Pros:

– Contains aloe extract for extra moisturizing effect
– UVA/UVB coverage
– Absorbs quickly
– No white cast
– No peeling

Cons:

– Contains alcohol and some chemical filters which may be irritating for sensitive skin

The COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream is a creamy and lightweight sunscreen that absorbs like a dream. You won’t have to worry about a white cast (in fact, most of the sunscreens we’ve selected do not cause a white cast, because Bride of Frankenstein is not a great look on anyone outside of Halloween). Despite being a high SPF sunscreen, it does not feel heavy or greasy at all. We also love the fact that it doesn’t pill when we apply additional moisturizer or makeup on top.

Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel SPF50 PA+++ Review

HIGHLIGHTS

Pros:

– Very light texture

– UVA/UVB coverage
– Waterproof/sweatproof
– No white cast
– No peeling

Cons:

– Contains alcohol and some chemical filters which may be irritating for sensitive skin

True to its name, the Shiseido SENKA Mineral Water UV Gel has a light, watery texture, more like a serum or sunscreen lotion than a typical sunscreen. It absorbs readily into the skin and softens the skin in the process. An added bonus we like: this broad spectrum sunscreen is waterproof and sweat-proof, making it a great choice for the hot and humid weather of summer.

Since this sunscreen face lotion contains alcohol, it can be drying for non-oily skin type. It also contains octinoxate and several other chemical filters, which can be irritating if you have sensitive skin. However, a quick check on CosDNA shows that it is within safe levels in terms of irritants, so this is a good bet if you have oily skin. As with everything, be sure to patch-test first.

This Japanese sunscreen is a long term favorite for many of our readers. There is no white cast when you put it on, and it also does not pill under your makeup, which is super helpful when you need to reapply throughout the day. The gel-like texture is refreshing and soothes your skin, making it one of the best sunscreen to calm an oily face.

– Great oil control
– UVA/UVB coverage
– No peeling
– Contains royal jelly extract to nourish skin and reverse aging
– Contains hyaluronic acid extract to naturally moisturize skin

Cons:

– Contains alcohol and some chemical filters which may be irritating for sensitive skin

The Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence has long been a cult favorite among the Asian Beauty community, and for good reasons. HIGHLIGHTS

Pros:

– UVA/UVB coverage
